Autumnal Royal Windsor. The Castle, the Great Park and Canadian Maples

Sat 1 Nov 2020

Welcome to Windsor – home to Windsor Castle seat of the Royals. We start our hike at the grand Central Station only steps away from the Castle.

  • Gallops – Calvary training grounds
  • Queen Anne’s Ride
  • ‘The Village’ built in the 1930s to house Royal estate workers.
  • ‘Jubilee Statue’ of Queen Elizabeth
  • The Royal School

UK set for burst of vivid autumn colours after sunny September.
The golds, reds, purples, russets and oranges that provide a burst of joy before the winter months are likely to be particularly vivid this year.’
Guardian 5 October 2020

We will pass by the Guildhall and Royal Mews of the old town and enter Home Park.

We will follow the famous ‘Long Walk’ into Windsor Great Park. This tree-lined avenue stretches 4 KM from the ancient Castle to Snow Hill. At the very top a copper horse statue of King George III. The hill is 75m high – from it, we have views across the Deer Park to Eton College, Windsor Castle and the arch at Wembley stadium. Look out for Red Deer – they often pose for photographs!

The southern side of the Great Park is home to Virginia Water and Valley Gardens. Enjoy twisting Autumnal woodland trails with glimpses of glittering water. At the end of the Canadian Memorial Walk of Maples and Beeches, there is a towering 100-foot Totem Pole. At this time of year the red fungi is out!
