Wye Valley
It’s the time of year when splashing about on the water seems the perfect way to cool down, assuming we are having a hot summer, and the river beckons every man and woman to relax in the peace of the flowing water and birdlife…..This might, however, get occasionally disrupted by the splashing and capsizing canoes and chatter and drinking around the campfire.
The River Wye is renowned for its leisurely canoeing and is truly a majestic river, full of wildlife and colour. We will be canoeing on the River Wye, between Hoarwithy and Symonds Yat, which is regarded by many as being one of the most picturesque river sections in the UK.
Our journey along the River Wye will be via a flotilla of canoes from Hoarwithy to Symond Yat (about 28 miles) over 2 days and camping halfway.
Camping info
There are a minimum of two experienced and qualified leaders on this event. Our guides have extensive experience hosting events and have been wilderness first aid trained. This has been a very popular event which we have enjoyed operating at least twice a year over the past decade.
We will be staying in a campsite beside the river where campfires are permitted and showers are available. However, the facilities are basic! We will also be able to walk into Ross on Wye where we have some good dining venues on a Saturday night. We will also enjoy a cooked breakfast indoors on both mornings and possibly dinner on Saturday.
Tents will be provided, these range between 3 & 10 person tents, but we usually only accommodate 2 or 7 people in each. You are welcome to bring your own tent if you wish. But please advise in advance.

Click here for full details on the venue and how to get there.
Canoes
The canoes will be open Canadian style canoes suitable for three persons per canoe. Life jackets will be supplied and you will be required to wear them at all times on the water.
Watertight storage drums will be available on each boat to store valuables, lunch etc. You will only be taking the items you need for the day as the tents will remain at the same campsite.
No experience is needed at all. As long as you are capable of paddling for about 4-5 hours over the course of each day. Full instruction and a safety briefing will be given prior to departure.
The canoeing will be self-guided and not by the operator.
Food
AAA food quality has become well known within the Hiking community. Our camping trip is no different. You will be met upon arrival with a welcome BBQ with vegetarian and vegan options cooked on a dedicated BBQ. There will also be cake!
Breakfast is an important start to the day, so we want to make sure it’s as good as it can be. Each days breakfast venue is different. On Saturday we start with a full English breakfast with cereals, porridge or grapefruit. If a full English isn’t your thing then there are plenty of other options including kippers, scrambled egg with salmon etc. On Sunday we paddle to our breakfast venue where a cooked breakfast is also provided.
Getting there
This AAA event starts and ends at the campsite so you will need to arrange your own transport to/from there.
