Enjoy a majestic sea cliff hike on the Seven Sisters Chalk cliffs. This route is a popular day hike from London. We start in Seaford and we will finish at a pub in Eastbourne.
- Seaford Beach and Mortello Tower
- Cuckmere Haven
- The Seven Sisters Chalk Cliffs
- Birling Gap – NT cafe and Beach
- Belle Tout Light House
- Beachy Head
- Popular Hike, features in ‘Best Coastal hikes’ in both Trip Advisor and The Guardian.
- Pub Finish in Eastbourne
We head towards the beach and along the promenade where we pass the Napoleonic era Martello Tower. The fort formed part of a series of identical towers stretching along the English coast to defend against a French invasion. We climb up the hill above the beach for a wide-ranging view of Seaford [dubbed the ‘Schools’ town with a large number of Public Schools] and Newhaven harbour.
We continue up onto the white chalky cliff of Seaford Head where we get a stunning view of the iconic Seven Sisters with picture-postcard views of Cuckmere Haven and the coast guard cottage overlooking the mouth of the river estuary. Famously used by Microsoft as a screensaver many years ago, also featuring in the 1969 Battle of Britain movie! The Seven Sisters cliffs often stand in filmmaking and television as the famous White Cliffs of Dover!
The hike progresses around the River Cuckmere and up onto the Seven Sisters. We tick them off one by one and take lunch at the National Trust Cafe at Birling Gap. Up again to the Belle Tout lighthouse and Beachy Head. They have a storied history. One feature in the 1987 James Bond Living Daylights and the other marked landfall on the RAF bomber route during WW2. There is a hauntingly beautiful monument. We overlook the Beachy Head lighthouse with its red and white stripes guaranteeing a vivid photo opportunity!
Our walk will then take us down into Eastbourne and to our final pub stop.
