Hike Grades

HIKE GRADING
Our hike grades are a guideline for you to gauge the most appropriate route selection for your days hiking.
Challenging

Daily Distance: Distance isn’t the deciding factor

Ascents: 800-1400m (2500 and 4500 ft)

Terrain: Very Hard

Hikes with high peaks, multiple ascents and difficult arêtes in some exposed areas. These are very strenuous and exciting hikes where participants should be experienced and fit, as they would require large amounts of strenuous climbs and scramble in order to enjoy these levels of hikes.

‘Scrambling’ means that hands are needed for movement along a trail over rocky terrain. It is intermediate between walking and rock climbing. Scrambling does not always mean ‘vertigo-inducing’!

Technical skills and equipment might be required such as the use of ropes, ice axe’s and use of crampons would be required.

Energetic

Daily Distance: 15-25 km (10-15 miles)

Ascents: 500-1000m (1500 and 3000 ft)

Terrain: Moderate to Hard, stronger pace

If you already enjoy the mountain, moorland or hill walking, these hikes let you pick up the pace by climbing higher peaks and walking more challenging tracks. Your reward is a really exhilarating walking programme that might include some tracks close to adjacent to steep drops. Some light scree and rocky terrain might be involved with some short and low levels of scrambling.

The terrain is moderate to hard with normally 13-19 km (8-12 miles) daily, with ascents of 500-1000 m (1500 – 3000 ft). Walking times of around 7 hours plus a day.

Footwear recommended for our Energetic Hike is definitely walking boots with a moulded sole with a deep tread, good ankle support and waterproof uppers are essential for walks in the winter. Lightweight walking boots with a moulded rubber sole with a good tread and which provide ankle support might be adequate for some summer walks

Moderate

Daily Distance: 15-20 km (9-13 miles)

Ascents: 250-600m (800 and 2000 ft)

Terrain: Moderate, mainly paths

Slightly strenuous walking on easier to moderate slopes, tracks and paths, plus hills and easier mountains, which may be rough or wet underfoot at times. Typically, these hikes will be in areas of low-level mountains, moorland or undulating countryside.

The terrain is moderate will vary from peaks reaching 750m (2500ft) at certain mountain points with inclines between 250-600m (800ft and 2000ft) with daily walking rarely between 5-6 hours rarely exceeding 6 or 7 hours.

Footwear recommended for our Moderate hikes would be a lightweight walking boot with a moulded rubber sole with a good tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended for these hikes. If you are an experienced walker with strong ankles a good quality pair of trail shoes may well be suitable for some walks dependent upon the ground conditions.

Relaxed

Daily Distance: 10-15 km (6-9 miles)

Ascents: under 300m (under 1000 ft)

Terrain: Mainly paths

Our easier walking grades, where hikes are at a gentler pace, with only an average fitness required. You’ll enjoy days out on gentle slopes, distinct coastal and valley tracks and paths that are mostly defined paths, with no special difficulties.

The terrain is easy with walks from 10-15 km (5-8 miles), average 4-5 hours walking a day with some sightseeing and inclines generally under 1000ft (300m). This is not to say that the terrain is not wet or muddy!

Footwear recommended for our Relaxed Hikes would be good quality walking shoes or trail shoes with a thick, moulded rubber sole with a good tread and a low heel are likely to be all that is required for these hikes.

Leisurely

Daily Distance: 6-12 km (4-7 miles)

Ascents: under 300m (under 1000 ft)

Terrain: Good paths and gentle pace

Our easier walking grades, where hikes are at a gentler pace, with only an average fitness required

You’ll enjoy days out on good paths, minimal slopes and tracks that are most popular and well-used paths, with no special difficulties or significant gradients.

Footwear recommended for our Leisurely Hikes would be good quality walking shoes or trail shoes with a thick, moulded rubber sole with a good tread and a low heel are likely to be all that is required for these hikes.

A week-long trip to West Highlands & Ben Nevis exceeded my expectations. Everything was so well organised, but with... plenty of flexibility to adapt to the changing weather conditions and the group dynamics/requirements. There was a variety of hikes suitable for different fitness levels and abilities. The hike leaders were all excellent. Accommodation was in comfortable single and twin rooms, our chalet had a lovely mountain view. We had a cooked breakfast every day (Misha's porridge is famous for a reason!) and there was a good choice of ingredients for our sandwiches/packed lunches. We also visited some nice local restaurants. If you like hiking, I'd definitely recommend AAA. I'm looking forward to booking more adventures with them soon.read more

I recommend the whole package ….. Hike Leaders Misha and Mike are welcoming, friendly, organised, funny and very... professional and knowledgeable during the hikes. Just got back from Cornwall 3night break where I had the best time! Got to meet friendly hikers old and new that are now friends …. also the gr8 weather was a bonus this time of year. As always the accommodation was perfect, this time we stayed in a converted farmhouse. Food was lovely prepared by Sara, Misha, Mike and volunteers occasionally lending a hand in the kitchen 😀😀😀 If you like good hearty food then this is the group for you. Even more so if you like cake 🍰😀😀😀.read more

Just back from a double adventure with Mike in Scotland - this was my first longer trip with AAA and it definitely... won’t be the last! Can’t recommend them highly enough - I was genuinely impressed with Mike’s knowledge of all things outdoors and his ability to keep an eye on everything and everyone at the same time! Him and the other guides, Nick and Jez, went out of their way to make everyone feel challenged, but also comfortable, safe and at ease. 10/10!read more

I joined the Canterbury trip at the end of July, the first trip I'd done with the group. Everyone was very welcoming... and friendly, the hikes were well organised, lots of lovely homemade food and excellent organisation throughout the weekend. I've made several friends there already and am looking forward to the next event I can join. Covid 19 has made this kind of event more of a challenge, but the planning was first rate. What an amazing experience! I recently joined the group on a trip to Pembrokeshire national park, Wales. If you are... even considering joining the group for a trip of any length. Do it! You will not regret it! Firstly it was amazing value for money and meticulously organised. There is loads of detail about the trip, accommodation and hiking but if you have any questions no matter how small, one of the amazing team will get back to you quickly. The food on the trip is something else! So much thought goes into all the meals and they are delicious! And they’re very accommodating to various dietary requirements. They offered yoga and massages as well as the hiking itself but equally there is no pressure. There were a choice of three hikes; longer, medium and shorter. We shared stories in the evening over dinner and it sounds as though they were equally as impressive and enjoyable. Each of us even got a chance to visit a secret beach. I had lots of freedom and time to do my own thing throughout the trip but rarely wanted to, the whole team and the other guests were so friendly and welcoming. I feel like I’ve joined a new family. I literally cannot wait to book my next trip!!!read more
