New to AAA

New to A A A We were all first-timers once

So, I’m guessing you’ve just taken the plunge and hit that “Join Group” button on Meetup or signed up to an event on the website, if so, welcome to AAA.

But, there’s also a shy voice in the back of your head asking you what you’re doing, placing yourself out of your comfort zone. Telling you, it’s all going to be a wee bit scary and you’re not sure if this is really you. Well, before you hesitate and withdraw with a glass of wine in front of Netflix, remember it’s completely normal, and it happens to most people joining a group on their own and contemplating a trip away with strangers for the first time.

To help cool your nerves, here are just some of the common fears and how you can handle them.

We were all first-timers once, and we hope that your first AAA experience and seeing other first-timers joining our trips will help settle your nerves.

Our hope is that like us this becomes the most epic experiences of your life, so let’s get going. We have certainly seen the positives it’s given ourselves and many other members

What happens if I can find anyone to get on with?

If you are not up for speaking to friendly outdoorsy people and opt for hiding away in your room then maybe this isn’t the perfect setting for you! However, if you’re open-minded and genuinely interested in types of people and their travel tales, there’s no way you can’t have a fabulous time at one of our events. There are thousands of interesting people from a whole variety of backgrounds.

We enjoy spending our time organising lots of adventures for busy people. Most of the people who join are in their late 20s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond, like us. So you are bound to find lots of like-minded people in the same boat, sometimes literally if you’re on one of our kayaking trips.

The joys of social media sharing have shown us as hosts over the years that many people who meet on the weekend go on to build long-lasting friendships. More than anything we have immensely enjoyed seeing people who first met on a AAA trip undertake long-distance travels together, build strong social bonds, even relationships that have led to marriages and or children.

None of this positivity would have occurred if people didn’t take the first few tentative steps.

Couples are also very welcome as this isn’t a singles-only group many people have met through the group and continue to travel with us as couples, asking in advance for a couples room.

Modern-day life makes it tricky to develop wholesome friendships when everyone is busy or got their heads focused on their mobiles. But when you come on a AAA London Group event with us, we remove all those everyday obstacles – there’s no commute or bills for you to sort out! Instead, you’ll fill your time doing incredible things with genuinely lovely people in great locations. This kind of experience brings together people quickly but naturally and creates meaningful, long-lasting friendships.

Who doesn’t like travelling, check out our European destinations?

What if I hate it?

If you have looked at our Facebook or Meetup pages, you will probably have seen the many photos from our past events. You’ll probably have liked the look of one of the extraordinary adventures to some great destinations that we take members too and the unforgettable experiences we offer along the way.

Plus, we will have taken care of the planning and logistics, leaving you only to worry about what to wear that day? Unless you’re a child, this might be a luxury you haven’t experienced in years, so take our advice and grab the opportunity with both hands and jump on board.

But what if you don’t like all aspects of the trip? No problem, we’re not here to make you do anything, it’s all optional. After all, it’s your adventure so, make it what you want it to be. AAA trips almost always have multiple hike leaders so you will have a choice of hikes to choose from, including relaxed to challenging options.

If you’re still concerned, why not join us on a day hike or event and meet other like-minded members and one of our hosts.

Check out some of our day hikes.

I haven't shared a room since I was on a school trip!

We understand you, but there’s nothing to worry about. Most of our group trips will be spent out hiking and adventuring. Once you’ve had a full day hiking topped off by a cream tea and tasty supper with maybe some chat or a few games accompanied by the odd glass of wine you’ll be sure to crash out and be oblivious to the fact you are sharing a room.

It’s also worth noting that sharing a room can equally be fun. Lots of people truly connect and request to share on future trips.

In lots of venues, we can offer alternatives to sharing, although experience has shown that most of our members choose to share, choosing to spend that extra cash on massages and another bottle of wine. However, if sharing isn’t your preference, that’s fine, be sure to request a single room well in advance, when available.

Still not convinced, then join us on a weekend trip, it’s usually only two nights and rarely more than £150 for an entire weekend of hiking, great food and accommodation.

Check out some of our weekend trips here.

I think I would hate being told what to do every day.

Firstly no one will be telling you what to do. If we adopted that approach, we would never be able to have hosted the 1000’s of events we have to date. We do have an event programme, but this is to ensure we can all get out and enjoy the environment we have taken the time to visit. Otherwise, we could be left waiting until midday for some to surface from their dreams.

If you are a leader in your everyday working life, you may well feel relieved when someone else is leading the way, and you can sit back and relax and follow. After all, it’s what we’re here for, and I know I’d relish the opportunity myself.

What if I'm not physically fit enough for the hikes?

If the only bit of exercise you’re interested in involves binge-watching your favourite Netflix show, don’t worry. All of our hiking events are created with the late 20s-50 and beyond in mind. We know it’s hard to fit in quality ‘me’ time and work out. But then we choose to use the countryside as our gym! Most people joining our weekends away are not super fit, so we don’t expect you to be an elite mountaineer. Some events are more challenging than others; for example, our trips to Slovenia can be more physical in the hiking. Yet the Italian Lakes trips, which can offer equally as challenging hiking, are also blessed with lots of cable cars ensuring peak hikes without the climbs. We are sure that you’ll enjoy our activities wherever we travel to as we always cater for different levels of hiking from the moderate to the more energetic. If you are reasonably active and a 3-hour walk in the countryside has you motivated to hit hills, then you’ll love our adventures.

AAA always uses highly experienced Mountain Leaders, many of whom are ex-military and have a wealth of navigation, group management and first aid experience. So you’ll be in safe hands.

We like to get immersed in any destination we visit and experience the country in whichever way we can, and that includes hiking, kayaking and canoeing. So things that may leave you exhausted at the end of the trip; but we want you to feel like you are challenged, even if it’s only a small challenge. We are sure you’ll be able to handle anything we organise on a group trip if you keep a determined mindset.

I have sampled many AAA trips in the UK before, where the hospitality.and organising of activities had always been... outstanding , but abroad trips is yet another step up in terms of how immaculately everything had been orchestrated, from airport transfers to daily activities including evening meals, sightseeing and educational talks about local nature, customs and food. I fell in love with Slovenia thanks to you guys. This trip also boosted my confidence after long lockdown months and now I feel I am back on my feet again, my stamina improved after 5 days with AAA and now I am looking forward to exploring new roots with you! Thank you so much for such an amazing experience!read more

Just back from a double adventure with Mike in Scotland - this was my first longer trip with AAA and it definitely... won’t be the last! Can’t recommend them highly enough - I was genuinely impressed with Mike’s knowledge of all things outdoors and his ability to keep an eye on everything and everyone at the same time! Him and the other guides, Nick and Jez, went out of their way to make everyone feel challenged, but also comfortable, safe and at ease. 10/10!read more

Just completed hiking in Scotland, Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Oban and Isle of Skye followed by canoeing the Calidonian Canal.... Both fab trips, well organised and great food. Felt very safe on all the hikes even in bad weather and cater for all levels of ability. The Canoeing trip was amazing, we were blessed with sunshine most of the way, great organisation from Mike and leadership from the guide, the trip out did my expectations. Stunning camping spots and loch swimming every day.. I highly recommend AAA for trips and day hikes of which I have done many.. 👍👏👏read more

I joined the Canterbury trip at the end of July, the first trip I'd done with the group. Everyone was very welcoming... and friendly, the hikes were well organised, lots of lovely homemade food and excellent organisation throughout the weekend. I've made several friends there already and am looking forward to the next event I can join. Covid 19 has made this kind of event more of a challenge, but the planning was first rate. Thank you.read more

Joined the trip to Canterbury in July 2020. Fantastic organisation as always, delicious homemade food, great value for... money and friendly group plus excellent choice of hikes, combined with some sightseeing. In this Covid-19 situation, Mishal and the team made sure we were safe and behaved under government guidelines without affecting the overall experience. Looking forward to my next trip with AAA soon!read more

What an amazing experience! I recently joined the group on a trip to Pembrokeshire national park, Wales. If you are... even considering joining the group for a trip of any length. Do it! You will not regret it! Firstly it was amazing value for money and meticulously organised. There is loads of detail about the trip, accommodation and hiking but if you have any questions no matter how small, one of the amazing team will get back to you quickly. The food on the trip is something else! So much thought goes into all the meals and they are delicious! And they’re very accommodating to various dietary requirements. They offered yoga and massages as well as the hiking itself but equally there is no pressure. There were a choice of three hikes; longer, medium and shorter. We shared stories in the evening over dinner and it sounds as though they were equally as impressive and enjoyable. Each of us even got a chance to visit a secret beach. I had lots of freedom and time to do my own thing throughout the trip but rarely wanted to, the whole team and the other guests were so friendly and welcoming. I feel like I’ve joined a new family. I literally cannot wait to book my next trip!!!read more
